SAFETY MEASURES AND PRECAUTIONS

1. Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
   • Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including safety glasses or goggles to protect your eyes from flying wood particles, and hearing protection if the noise level is high.
2. Secure the Workpiece:
   • Ensure that the workpiece is securely clamped or held in place. This helps prevent the wood from shifting unexpectedly, reducing the risk of injury and improving the accuracy of the planning process.
3. Check the Sharpness of the Blade:
   • Make sure the blade of the bench plane is sharp. A dull blade can lead to more effort being exerted, increasing the chances of slips and accidents. Sharpen the blade regularly and follow proper sharpening procedures.
4. Adjust the Depth of Cut Carefully:
   • Set the depth of cut on the bench plane according to the requirements of the task. Avoid taking too deep a cut, especially when planning hard or difficult-to-work woods, to maintain control over the tool.
5. Position Hands Safely:
   • Keep your hands at a safe distance from the cutting edge of the plane. Hold the plane with both hands, one on the handle and the other on the knob, and maintain a firm grip while keeping fingers away from the path of the blade.
6. Work in the Right Direction:
   • Plane in the direction of the wood grain to minimize tear-out and ensure a smoother finish. Working against the grain can cause the wood fibers to lift and splinter.
7. Mind Your Body Position:
   • Stand or work in a stable position to maintain balance and control. Keep your body to the side of the plane's path rather than directly behind it to avoid injury in case the plane slips.
8. Use Push Sticks for Small Workpieces:
   • For smaller or narrower pieces, consider using push sticks to feed the workpiece through the plane. This helps maintain a safe distance between your hands and the cutting edge.
9. Clear the Work Area:
   • Keep your work area clean and well-lit. Remove debris and obstacles from the floor to prevent tripping hazards. A clean workspace contributes to better focus and control.
10. Be Mindful of Surroundings:
    • Be aware of the people around you and make sure there is enough space for you to maneuver the bench plane without accidentally coming into contact with others.
11. Disconnect Power Tools:
    • If you are using a power bench plane, disconnect it from the power source when changing blades or making adjustments to prevent accidental starts.
12. Follow Manufacturer's Guidelines:
    • Adhere to the manufacturer's guidelines and recommendations for the specific bench plane you are using. This includes proper setup, maintenance, and safety instructions provided in the user manual.
